Fishing VesselFishermen and the fishing industry are a fundamental piece of the picture which is OCENS. In fact, from its very first sea temperature and weather products almost twenty years ago, OCENS has been developing services and software tailored to the needs of the fishing industry. The diverse family of assets now includes satellite communication equipment and airtime, software that continues to apply its focus to the needs of the marine user, ocean data recognizing that time saved searching for fish is money in the bank, comprehensive weather information, email providing the highest possible compression levels, web acceleration and compression, tools which enable yet control crew access, and even IT and networking assistance. Professional staff with fishing industry experience contribute to a long history of comprehensive, ‘first name basis’ technical and administrative support to fishermen. We’re proud of the fact that we were spawned from the needs of the fishing industry. Perhaps even more important we remain true to this legacy with a commitment to addressing the unique needs of fishing companies in a cost-effective and creative manner.

Iridium 9555 handheld phones and docking systems

Iridium is the only satellite system able to work on any of the world’s oceans and as such provides unparalleled reliability and ease of use. Voice services are clear and consistent from North Pole to South. OCENS email and weather services transform the Iridium data service into an efficient means of addressing your fishing and fishery reporting, administrative and logistical realities. Docking stations and external antenna kits available from OCENS permit installations with much of the utility of fixed site systems and all of the flexibility possible only with a handheld phone. Aggressive prepaid and postpaid airtime plans are available.

Oceana 400 and 800

Inmarsat’s Oceana systems deliver very low cost voice and data connections through a fixed platform. They augment this high-fidelity, no-fuss baseline with useful services such as PBX integration, secondary sim slots for crew usage, hands-free speaker phones, rugged maritime antennas, Bluetooth access and position reporting. Coverage extends from 70N to 70S.

Fleet Broadband

If your applications require a mix of high and low bandwidth connectivity without capital costs breaking the bank, the Fleet Broadband service can be your most responsive solution. OCENS Fleet 150 packages from Skipper or Sailor are ideal for trawlers, longliners, crabbers, seiners and other small to medium-sized vessels where space is particularly limiting but broadband connections a necessity. The Fleet 250 systems are best suited for customers who demand higher upload and download speeds or experience heavier networking demands. Fleet 500 systems offer the fastest background IP and streaming services as well as fax service throughout the 70N to 70S range of the service.

VSAT

OCENS sells the V3 VSAT system and service from KVH. VSAT best addresses that portion of the fishing market where Internet access is a must. Although the V3 capital costs are significantly higher and its speeds inferior to the bandwidth available through Fleet Broadband, it delivers broadband access at a much lower cost per megabyte than can Inmarsat’s Fleet Broadband. As a result, extensive Internet access for crew and vessel operations can be affordable if managed properly. Coverage is regional.

WeatherNet

WeatherNet was created for the fishing industry. We set out to develop a service that rapidly delivered the widest range of ocean data and weather information as rapidly as possible through a satellite connection. Ocean data includes a comprehensive suite of sea temperature, currents, chlorophyll, sea surface height, mixed layer depth, ice and even salinity files. Weather information covers all the bases from the world’s largest library of gridded data (GRIB) to classical information such as text forecasts, weather charts, and buoy data. We set this inside a business model that eliminated monthly access fees and surcharges. And we coupled the service with powerful tools for viewing and analyzing the data, tools we call GRIB Explorer and MetMapper.

OCENS Mail single and multi-user editions

Whether your satellite systems charge by the minute or the megabyte, OCENS Mail reduces your expenses by compressing and accelerating email transfers through your satellite phones. Features tuned to the realities of satellite communications include bigmail transfers, mid-file restarts and batch compression. Robust virus detection and spam filters are standard. Our multi-user Enterprise edition allows you to offer email to crew without exposing you to excessive airtime bills. File Transfer modules automate the receipt and delivery of administrative and logistical files.

webXaccelerator

Once broadband is on-board via Fleet or VSAT, everyone wants to use it. Personal email, web browsing, video feeds, and audio files all become potential drains not only on the bandwidth available for ship’s business but also on your bank account. WebXaccelerator puts a stop to that. Bandwidth shaping separates and reserves official ship traffic from the personal business of crew and officers. Pin-based metering allows you to recover the cost of crew traffic up-front. Compression reduces the overall volume of the traffic through your system. Reporting allows remote monitoring of the volume and character of traffic through your system. Failover incorporates secondary or lower bandwidth connections into your communication approach. Wired and wifi units available.

E5 crew dialer

The E5 extends voice calling to your crew through your Fleet Broadband through a prepaid pin approach. Sell E5 pins to your crew and they can make voice calls to any location in the world using OCENS Fleet Broadband. Since crew have already paid you for the calling pin, there is no risk to you of later facing large, unrecoverable voice airtime bills. Pins are generated electronically and emailed to you as needed.
