Regarding Email Firewalls / OCENS Services
Standard email communication between your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc.) is typically setup to communicate via IMAP/POP and SMTP communication ports. If you have a network connection that has a firewall these ports would need to be open to send and receive emails. This also allows your emails to automatically sync as needed (update automatically with any changes such as marking emails as sent, read, deleted, etc. as you may have done this on other devices such as your smartphone and want the changes reflected on your computers version).
OCENSMail installs a helper program between your email client and the network. When sending email using the OCENSMail setup - your email is sent using standard email protocols as normal but to our program rather than directly over the internet. This way our program can capture these email files, compress them, and then send them as compressed packet files over the network. The OCENSMail helper app communicates via standard TCP internet protocols, different from the IMAP/POP and SMTP communication ports. When on satellite connections this will save you data usage as the files will be much smaller.
When messages are received via OCENSMail app we are able to compress the messages on our server before they are sent. The app then decompresses the messages once received and presents them in a standard format so your email client can retrieve them from the helper program as regular email using the standard email protocols. We are also able to effectively capture emails based on size and allow you to control how big of emails are automatically transferred (maybe you only want to receive emails up to a certain size - lager ones are held, you can then allow those to transfer manually if you really want to get that file over your satellite connection or wait till you have a cheaper connection in port) giving you more control over your data usage. There is no automatic background syncing happening here as well (saving on data usage).
When using a device such as the Skylink 6100 - where you may see an option to open the built in firewall for email services - you need to keep in mind that they are opening just the IMAP/POP and SMTP communication ports. This will work for email if you are planning to use your regular email/client directly over the network. Keep in mind that your emails are uncompressed, unmanaged and this allows for background syncing - all using more data than you may have planed or know about.
To use OCENSMail with the 6100 you will need to turn off the firewall on the 6100. Yes this will allow all sorts of data through. To protect you, you will want to use OCENS Sidekick firewall device between the 6100 and your computer/device that is running the OCENS software. This will protect your system from unwanted data and only allow the OCENS program to communicate through the network.
